Conservation-led repair of original steel windows
Original Crittall and steel-framed windows are a defining feature of many historic and period properties across Dorset. Their slim sightlines, elegant proportions and handcrafted details contribute hugely to the character of older buildings. Where possible, restoring these windows rather than replacing them helps retain architectural integrity, satisfies conservation and listed building requirements, and preserves materials that were made to last. Thoughtful restoration can dramatically improve function and appearance while respecting the building’s original fabric and comes in at a fraction of the cost of replacing with new Crittle/ steel-framed windows.

Careful removal of the window
Each window is removed with minimal disturbance to surrounding fabric.

Assessment once stripped back
Corrosion, failed joints and previous repairs are assessed properly once coatings are removed.
Steel repairs where required
Localised repairs are carried out using like-for-like steel sections. Where appropriate, welding is used to strengthen and stabilise original frames.

Timber frame repair
Any associated timber work is repaired or replaced using traditional methods and breathable materials.
Surface preparation
Steel is cleaned back to bare metal (often via blasting) to ensure long-term protection.
Priming and sprayed finish
Appropriate primers and paint systems are applied for durability and a clean, even finish.
Reglazing and sealing
Glass is reinstalled, sealed and finished sympathetically.

Reinstallation and final adjustments
Windows are refitted, aligned and checked for smooth operation.
